Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Brown Scapular

In honor of the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and in order to encourage devotion to her, we are including free brown scapulars with rosary orders placed now until her feast day on July 16.*

The Brown Scapular is a Catholic devotion that originated with the Carmelite order. Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite, and promised that the Scapular “shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” While wearing the Scapular does not guarantee salvation, if we wear it devoutly and fulfill Our Lady’s requests, she will certainly give us the guidance we need to remain close to her Son.

When Sister Lucia, to whom Our Lady of Fatima appeared, was asked if the Scapular was a part of the Fatima message she replied, “most definitely, the Scapular and the Rosary are inseparable. The Scapular is a sign of consecration to Our Lady.’” Since making an Our Lady of Fatima rosary, I’ve decided to enroll in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular. Our Lady’s feast day is July 16, but one can enroll at any time.

In order to join the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular, one must be enrolled by a priest. The Scapular itself must be made of wool, and it must be brown. Rare exceptions for other materials are made for certain conditions, like a wool allergy. The Scapular may be adorned with embroidery or an image, like the one we’re including with rosary orders in the weeks leading up to her feast day.

Like the rosary, the Brown Scapular is a wonderful sacramental. It is an external sign of one’s devotion to Mary. Our Lady always leads us to her Son, Jesus Christ, and with the rosary and Brown Scapular we can keep our Lord and his mother close! We encourage you to enroll in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular.
